Roger had retired from the Transport industry a couple of decades back and was most happy regularly participating in local HF Nets and making HF contacts before health stopped him being on-air. Details of Roger's funeral service and a more detailed life story will be released when available. Many thanks to Ray/VK4OIL and Mike/VK4MIK for providing notice of Roger's passing. - News from Central Queensland - Next CHARC Hodgsons Range VK4RHR Working Bee happening The next working bee to restore services to the VK4RHR Hodgsons Range Repeater Site between Dysart and Clermont in Central Queensland will be happening on Saturday 24th August. Work will include lowering and raising of the repeater site tower to facilitate antenna and feedline repairs, restoration of the VHF APRS service and the UHF Voice Repeater and links and remaking part of the site to make it more weather resistant. Testing and adjusting of filter systems and some transceivers will also take place. So far CHARC President Steve/VK4SM, Alister/VK4ARD, Joe/VK4JLK and Eli have already signed up to be on the repeater site but at least 2 more are needed to ensure the raising and lowering of the repeater tower is done safely. Helen/VK4FHEL and Peta are running base camp and more help there would be good to have. Base Camp will be preparing Lunch and snacks for the repeater site team. [being sure to convert the counter-measures first] - News from North Queensland - Anniversary 40metre activation of Oonoonba Bomb Site Ray/VK4OIL has received permission to run a multiple HF field station at the WW2 Heritage Oonoonba Bomb Site on Monday 29th July 2024. The operation will commemmorate the early morning explosion of a 250 pound bomb at the Oonoonba site which left a crater and the destruction of a palm tree. Ray plans for the operation to start at 2pm local (0400UTC) and start completing around 4pm local (0600UTC) and invites as many local hams that can come along and set up their portable 40metre stations on the site with working centred around 7100kHz LSB, with net co-ordination and spotting performed by VK4WIT at theTARCinc Club Station at West End. Ray also asks that DX stations in Australia and overseas actively operate to contact the commemorative stations operating from the WW2 Heritage Oonoonba Bomb Site to help support maintaining the site as an important community resource. Denison Creek Horse Endurance Rides Mackay Amateur Radio Association members provide Communications Support and Checkpoint services for the Horse Endurance Rides that happen at Denison Creek Station near Epsom Central Queensland. Their volunteer numbers are dwindling and they need a hand to provide a safety net for the events. The rides happen on the ramparts of Mount Seaview approx 60km southwest of Mackay and is accessed via the Peak Downs Highway at 21.482444S 148.810030E. Camping available at Ride Base and the event is made up of a number of stationary and mobile checkpoints. Rides start from 1pm Saturday and finish around 11am Sunday. They need Autosport and Radio savvy people to run checkpoints for the events. Operate at Checkpoints throughout the day with a ringside seat to see up close the offroad racing action whilst doing useful things with radios. Camping overnight Wednesday to Monday Night is available at the NQMS Radio Precinct, or if you prefer your creature comforts motels and pubs are available to stay in less than 10 minutes away from the venue.
