- Mount Stuart Repeaters and Beacons off-air for now Damage to mains switchgear by an electrical surge caused by a direct lightning strike on overhead reticulation cables at Mount Stuart early Saturday Morning 11th January 2025 has taken the Mount Stuart Amateur Radio and UHF CB Repeaters, VHF Digipeater and 23cm Beacon offline. Industrial standard surge protection successfully sacrificed itself to take out the main circuit breaker in time to protect equipment in the repeater hut. Site visits performed by Kerry/VK4TUB, Brad Split and Snow/VK4ME have confirmed the repeater hut equipment is working but will remain offline until replacement surge protection modules for the mains supply are delivered for installation at the repeater site. With frequent thunderstorms currently happening in the region it prudent to keep the repeater hut equipment isolated until the replacement protection equipment is in place. No ETA on the delivery of the surge protection modules, meantime News and Net transmissions are happening in the Townsville region on 146.700MHz simplex. If you have a 91.5Hz tone enabled on transmit you will also be able to access the VK4PQ Echolink and AllStarLink gateway and be heard on any other node or gateway connected at the time.
